Political Tensions Rise Over Karnataka’s Shakti Scheme

Bengaluru: A political controversy has erupted in Karnataka following Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s remark suggesting that numerous women are willing to forgo the free bus travel benefit under the Shakti scheme. Opposition leaders quickly labeled this statement as part of a broader plot to undermine the scheme, sparking heated debates in the state assembly and beyond.

The opposition criticized the state government, claiming it had depleted the state’s treasury to fulfill what they termed as unfeasible poll promises. Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the fray, utilizing social media to target the Congress party over its electoral commitments, which he argues are impractical and difficult to implement effectively.

In a series of posts on X, PM Modi asserted, “The Congress Party is realizing the hard way that making unreal promises is easy, but implementing them properly is tough or impossible.” He highlighted the gap between the Congress’s promises and their execution, stating that the party is now exposed to the public for its unfulfilled guarantees.

“Check any state where Congress governs today—Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. The developmental trajectory and fiscal health are turning from bad to worse. Their so-called guarantees lie unfulfilled, which is a terrible deceit upon the people of these states. The victims of such politics are the poor, youngsters, farmers, and women, who are denied the benefits of these promises and see their existing schemes diluted,” he added.

Modi urged citizens to remain vigilant against what he described as Congress’s culture of “fake promises,” citing recent electoral outcomes in Haryana where voters favored a stable and progress-oriented government over Congress’s alleged falsehoods.

The Prime Minister accused the Karnataka government of prioritizing internal party politics over development, stating, “In Karnataka, Congress is busier in intra-party politics and loot instead of even bothering to deliver on development. They are also going to rollback existing schemes.” He further criticized the Congress for delayed payments to government workers in Himachal Pradesh and unfulfilled farmer loan waivers in Telangana, pointing out the consistent pattern of unimplemented promises across various states.

As the political discourse heats up, the Shakti scheme, aimed at providing free transportation to women, finds itself at the center of this ongoing battle, with the opposition demanding accountability from the ruling party regarding its fiscal management and electoral promises.
